Computing - Word Processing
OpenOffice.org 'Writer' helps you to create documents, similar to Microsoft Word, and save them in several formats such as Microsoft Word, HTML, Adobe PDF. OpenOffice.org offers a suite of Free products that includes a Word Processor (Writer), Spreadsheet (similar to Excel), Database (Similar to Access), Presentation program (similar to Powerpoint) Hyperlinks are links that refer to an external resource such as a Web URL or could refer a document that resides on a separate resource or even within the same document. Hyperlinks can be placed in any document format such as a HTML, Writer, Word, Excel, PDF etc. This article explains the steps for creating Hyperlinks to navigate within a 'Writer' document.

Let us assume for this example that you wish to place an FAQ section within a 'Writer' document. Let us name these sections A,B, and C respectively. The objective is for the 'User' to click 'A' hyperlink and be directed to answers relating to 'A' and if the user clicks 'B', to be directed to 'B' section answers and so on.

The FAQ section will look something like this in the Writer document:

FAQ

(1) A

(2) B

(3) C

ANSWERS

(1) This is answer for section A

(2) This is answer for section B

(3) This is answer for section C

Steps

  • Place the cursor any where in the answer region for section A
  • Select Insert > Bookmark from the Writer menu. 'Insert Bookmark' window appears
  • Enter 'Bookmark name' in the field above. You can enter any name, but make it meaningful for easy reference. For this example, let us name it 'writer1'
  • Click the 'OK' button

First part of the process is complete. Now let us place an hyperlink for the related question.

  • Select the question in the FAQ region. In this example, it will be question 1
  • Select Insert > Hyperlink from the menu. This displays 'Hyperlink' window
  • Click the 'Document' icon on the Navigaton region. This is where you create hyperlink to an existing document or to a target within the same document
  • Enter 'writer1' (without the quotes) in the 'Target' field [writer1 is the name of the Bookmark given above]
  • Click the 'Apply' button and click 'Close'
  • Repeat the process for other sections.

Click the Hyperlink in the FAQ section (as per this example) and watch the result!

And what about insert hiperlinks when inserting table of contents? I can't do that. Are there some other ways to do it? If I try to insert one by one link and make a TOC, it will become a very boring task. I was looking for an automatic way to do that. Would somebody know how to do that?
