Net Meeting allows you to conduct remote sessions over the internet or intranet such as holding meetings, exchange notes, and conduct training sessions etc. This article outlines configuring Microsoft NetMeeting on a Windows PC. NetMeeting comes pre-installed with Windows 2000/XP Operating Systems. Other Windows users, can check Microsoft website to download Net Meeting software.

Configure Net Meeting
  • On Windows 2000, select Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > Net Meeting. This displays the Net Meeting wizard that guides through the setup process. On Windows XP select Start > Run
  • Enter conf and press the Enter key.
  • Click 'Next' on the Net Meeting window. Enter information about the person using this meeting.
  • Check the ' Log on to a directory server when NetMeeting starts' box, if you are using a directory server. Uncheck the box, if you plan to make connection over the Internet.
  • Specify the connection speed.
  • Optionally, have a shortcut for NetMeeting in the desktop.
  • Tune Audio settings by following the instructions from the Audio Tuning window.
  • Click Finish to complete NetMeeting setup.

Additional Steps for NetMeeting Host
  • If you are the NetMeeting host, configure Net Meeting to accept calls, share programs etc. Open Net Meeting:
  • Select Calls > Host Meeting from the menu.
  • Determine and set parameters as necessary
  • Check the Sharing box in the Meeting Tools region. Select Tools > Sharing from the menu. Select the Program to share and click Share
  • Determine the IP Address. Select Tools > About Windows NetMeeting from the menu. IP Address is used if you plan to use IP Address rather than a directory server. It is a good practice to check the IP address for Net Meeting from the NetMeeting menu, rather than using the Windows command line prompt.
  • Notify the participants of the IP Address.

Net Meeting Participant Settings

If you a participant do the following if you are connecting using IP Address.
  • Open Net Meeting.
  • Click 'Place Call' icon or select Call > New Call from the menu. Place a Call window appears.
  • Enter the IP Address of the Host in the 'To' field and click <Call> button to join.

NetMeeting was not available in Windows Vista either. They got replaced with Windows Meeting Workspace. Probably, you should look for this in Windows 7 as well.
