Computing - Windows
'cmd' is the command line utility for Windows NT based systems including Windows 2000 and XP. The Command Line tool can be opened by selecting Start > Run and by entering 'cmd' in the window. Entering 'Help' in the command prompt provides help information. The command window properties can be modified for ease of use. The properties that can be modified include:

  • Click on the prompt icon (small c:\ icon) at the header region of the Command window. This displays a drop-down menu. Select 'Properties' from the list to display 'Properties' window.
  • The 'Properties' window has four tabbed regions namely, Options, Font, Layout and Colors.
  • Select 'Quick Mode' checkbox in the 'Options' region. This allows you to copy and paste quickly with minimal steps. For example, you can copy from an external application such as 'Word' and paste onto the 'Command' window by double-clicking mouse (right click).
  • When 'Quick Mode' is enabled, you can also copy from the 'Command' window by double-clicking (left mouse button) the word to be copied (single word without spaces) and paste it by right-click of the mouse button.
  • The 'Fonts' region allows you to switch between 'Raster Fonts' (default) and Lucida Console.
  • Don't like the 'Black' window? Don't live with it. Make it more pleasing from the 'Colors' tabbed region.
  • Click 'OK' to save the changes. You have the option to make the changes for the current window or for future windows of the same title.
