One can interact with the Operating System either from a graphical interface or from the Command Prompt. From the Command Prompt you enter commands by supplying the required arguments. On Windows Operating System, the prompt appears by default displaying the current drive and path. You can change it by following the steps mentioned below.

Open Command Prompt

  • Select Start > Run.
  • Enter cmd in the 'Run' box to display command prompt window.
  • Enter prompt /? at the prompt to display the available options. Here is an extract on Windows XP.

    C:\>prompt /?
    Changes the cmd.exe command prompt.
    PROMPT [text]
    text Specifies a new command prompt.
    Prompt can be made up of normal characters and the following special codes:
    $A & (Ampersand)
    $B | (pipe)
    $C ( (Left parenthesis)
    $D Current date
    $E Escape code (ASCII code 27)
    $F ) (Right parenthesis)
    $G > (greater-than sign)
    $H Backspace (erases previous character)
    $L < (less-than sign)
    $N Current drive
    $P Current drive and path
    $Q = (equal sign)
    $S (space)
    $T Current time
    $V Windows XP version number

  • To change the prompt, enter PROMPT [text]. For example, to change prompt to 'Ampersand', enter the following as shown below:
    C:\>prompt $A &
