File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client is used to transfer files between your PC and a Server or vice versa. If your FTP Server has been setup to allow anonymous login, users can login without any credentials supplied. If anonymous login is not allowed, users will be required to enter a username and password. For security reasons, it might be a good practice to login using a username/password and also restrict the directories one can access. There are several commercial FTP clients available as well as Open Source applications.
Open Source FTP Client

Both commercial and free versions of FTP clients are available. A good Open Source FTP client is File Zilla. The following are the steps for installing and using FileZilla FTP client.
  • Installing FileZilla is simple and the installer is intuitive. The following are the steps involved: Download FileZilla FTP software from Here.
  • Open setup.exe to start the install program.
  • Select the type of install required (Standard, Full, or Custom) and optionally choose the components you need.
  • Select the Folder to install the files.
  • Choose a Start Menu for the Folder
  • Configure security mode settings. If you are planning to use FileZilla on a Computer that you share with others, then check ‘Use secure mode’ radio button. The program does not remember passwords and you need to enter passwords each time you access FileZilla.
  • Indicate whether to store the settings as an XML file or in the Windows registry. The default is XML
  • Choose the button to start the installation.

Using FileZilla

How to use FileZilla after installation?
  • After install, open FileZilla.
  • Select File > Site Manager from the menu.
  • Click <New Site> button and enter a descriptive Name for your FTP connection.
  • Enter Host name in the Host field on the right pane of the Site Manager window. Check with your ISP for the FTP logon information.
  • Select FTP as the Servertype.
  • Select Normal as the Logontype.
  • Enter User and Password details.
  • Click <Save and Exit> button.
External Reference

FileZilla has detailed documentation with screen-shots on using FileZilla. After install, open FileZilla and select Help > Contents from the menu to access the documentation. You can also access FileZilla Documentation
