MAC stands for Media Access Control that uniquely identifies a piece of hardware in a network and is made up of 12 digits.

If using a wireless router, you can set Access controls that allow only specified MAC Ids to access the router to prevent unauthorized access. On a different note, there are utilities available that allow you to change the MAC Address.


How to find MAC Address Windows NT/2000/XP

  • Open Command Prompt.
  • Enter ipconfig /all. An example of the output is given below.

The Physical Address will be your MAC Address.

How to find MAC Address on Linux
  • Sign on as root using su -
  • Enter ifconfig -a. An example of the output is given below.
[tsc@localhost ~]$ su -
Password:
[root@localhost ~]# ifconfig -a
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0F:B0:0B:4F:C3
inet addr:192.168.1.21 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

The MAC Address is listed as HWaddr. In this case 00:0F:B0:0B:4F:C3
