Linux is a free Operating System created by Linus Torvalds and distributed under the terms of GNU General Public License. It supports several languages and come in different flavors such as Red Hat, Debian, Mandrake, Fedora etc. The Linux Distributions, over the years, have become very user friendly for the non-*ix users and support a wide range of applications that rivals and in some cases excel other Operating Systems. Out of Box Linux Distributions are available at retailers or you can download one of the many versions free and use it along with Windows.

Can I use Linux without installing on my PC? Yes, you can by using Knoppix; a free Linux distribution based on Debian that allows you to run out of a CD (Lite version) or DVD.

Getting Started

• Download Knoppix from here.
• The files are in .iso format, which is a disk image of the Linux distribution.
• Most CD Burner softwares can convert an .iso image. CD Burner XP Pro is one such software that is also free.
• On completion, insert Knoppix CD and reboot your system. Knoppix Linux is all set for use!
• Knoppix detects most of the devices such as USB / Firewire, Mouse, Soundcard, Video Card, Monitor etc on startup without the need for any manual configuration.

• Mozilla and Knoqueror browsers.
• Thunderbird email client.
