Messenger Service is a feature in Windows that is used by System Administrators to broadcast messages over a Network. For example, a System Administrator might send a message stating that all the Servers will be shut down for maintenance. This message is transmitted through the Messenger Service utility. This feature is not the same as Windows Messenger that is used for online chat.

How Abused

The Service can be manipulated to serve popup advertisements or other messages through a window titled Messenger Service? This results in spam, popup advertisements, and may also open the way for other malicious code to be sneaked on to your computer.

How to Disable Messenger Service
  • Open Control Panel from the Start Menu
  • Open Administrative Tools - If you are using Category View, select Performance and Maintenance and then Administrative Tools
  • Open Services
  • Double-click Messenger. Messenger Properties window appears.
  • Stop the service if it is running by choosing the button.
  • In the Startup Type field select Disabled from the list
  • Choose Apply and OK.
