Peaksaver is an innovative program offered in several cities in Ontario, Canada designed to reduce the strain on the energy grid during periods of high demand. Residential customers and small businesses who have a central air conditioning system may choose to partipate in the peak saver program.
Participants of the program get a Programmable Load Management Thermostat installed at their premises at no cost. Both the thermostat and the installation charges are free. The participants have the option to program the thermostat to suit their convenience. However, the energy provider has the ability to cycle down the power consumed during periods of high demand. For instance, if you have set the optimum temperature at 24 degrees during summer, the energy provider might increase in by couple of degrees (say 26 or 27) during periods of high demand to reduce the strain on the electrical system.
The participants also get a one time credit for participating in the program. Initially, the program was started in Toronto and now available in Ottawa, Mississauga and extended to other cities in Ontario. It is a volunteer program and hence the residents can opt out of the program any time. A few of the other features include:
