If you have got Permanent Residency in Canada you can take your personal effects (including car) with you. This article explains the steps required to export your vehicle (Immigration related) to Canada from the United States and the Registration formalities to be complied with. Preliminary Steps - First and foremost determine whether your car is admissible into Canada. You can check this at Registrar of Imported Vehicles(RIV), Canada (http://www.riv.ca)or by calling them at 1-888-848-8240.
- Call the vehicle Manufacturer and request a 'Recall' clearance letter. This is required later for registration. The above cited website lists the Manufacturers and the contact Numbers for obtaining 'Recall' letter. You can also obtain the 'Recall' letter from the Dealer.
- Determine the Border Post that you plan for 'Immigration Landing' and call the US Customs and inquire about exporting your car. You will be given a fax number to fax in the Title.
- Fax the Title Deed of your car to US Customs atleast 72 hours (3 busines days) in advance. This is an important and required part of the process.
- After a few hours of faxing, call and verify whether they are in receipt of the fax. Have the Title Deed and the VIN Number on hand.
On the Day of Crossing - Before crossing into Canada, STOP at the US Customs to complete the Car Export process. If you cross the Border into Canada without completing this, you will be asked to go back and have this taken care.
- The US Customs will ask for the title Deed and inspect the VIN Number of your car. They will make an endorsement on the Title Deed and give it to you. You are all set from the US Side.
- Drive over to the Canadian side (You have to stop at the Customs for completing other formalities as well)and handover the Title Deed.
- You will be asked to pay the requisite fees. You will be given a Form (Form 1) and instructed that it be kept on the car at all times until the tag is changed.
- Within 10 days you will receive Form 2 from the RIV instructing you to carry out the inspection and modifications (if any) listed and the compliance date.
- Take the car to an authorised shop for carrying out the modifications and inspection. All Canadian Tire locations are authorised. You need to submit Form 1, Form 2, and the Recall Letter for the inspection.
- Complete the inspection and the modifications listed, if any. If your car does not have Day-time Running Lights (DTL), you will need one. The cost including labor for DTL is around $150 (Canadian Dollars). Apart from this, there is a Federal Inspection (around $70) and Emission Check (around $35) done. If the Odometer display's Miles it is accepted as long as the Kilometre (KM) is also displayed in the Odometer.
- On completion, you will be given the duly stamped Form 1 and Form 2, Safety Standard Certificate, and Emission Certificate. You are all set to complete the Registration.
- Take the forms to the nearest Licence or Tag office to complete Registration.
