GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is free and advanced image editing program available under the terms of GNU Public General License and available for Windows, Mac as well as Linux Operating Systems. You can also perform basic screen capture using GIMP.

Installing GIMP for Windows comprises the following:
- Install GTK + runtime environment
- Install GIMP
GTK + runtime environment
- Download from http://gimp-win.sf.net
- Launch the executable file to start the installation. Setup wizard appears. Click the <Next> button.
- Read the GNU License Agreement and click the <Next> button.
- Select directory location to install and click <Next>.
- Select components to install and click <Next>.
- If there are dll files that conflict with GTK program, a message window appears listing the conflicting files. Read FAQ at http://gimp-win.sf.net for possible solutions and take action accordingly.
- Browse the Summary of install and click <Install> button to start installation.
- Click <Finish> button to exit the wizard.
After installing GTK runtime environment, proceed to install GIMP software.
- Download from http://www.gimp.org/windows/
- Save the file to your local directory.
- Launch the executable file to start the installation. Setup wizard appears. Click the <Next> button.
- Read the GNU License Agreement and click the <Next> button.
- Select directory location to install and click <Next>.
- Select components to install and click <Next>.
- Select file associations and click the <Next> button.
- Select Start Menu Folder and click <Next>.
- Select additional tasks (quicklaunch and desktop icons) and click <Next>.
- Click <Install> to start the installation.
- Click <Finish> to close the wizard. GIMP User Installation window appears.
- Click <Continue> button. Personal GIMP Folder window appears.
- Click <Continue>. This creates the required Folders.
- Click <Continue>. GIMP Performance Tuning window appears. Specify the space for 'cache' and the swap folder. Click <Continue> to start GIMP.
GIMP has a basic screen capture feature when compared to commercial versions such as SnagIt or Hypersnap. You can either capture a specific window or the entire screen. Following are the steps:
- Open GIMP.
- Select File > Acquire > Screen Shot from the menu.
- Select either 'Grab a single window' or 'Grab the whole screen'
- Specify delay parameters and click <Grab> button to capture screen shot.
GIMP is an advanced image editing utility. You can resize, add text, special effects and much more.
- Open GIMP.
- Select File > Open from the menu to edit an existing image.
- Select the image to edit and click the <Open> button.
- Use the pull down menus to edit the image as desired.
If you get an error message while accessing Help (stating that Help files are not installed), you need to download and install the Help package. Instructions as below:
- GIMP help files can be downloaded from http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html.
- Download GIMP Help Packages to your local folder.
- Launch the setup file to install Help. GIMP Help Setup Wizard appears. Click <Next>.
- Clear the components you do not wish to install and click <Next>.
- Click <Install> to start the installation.
- Click <Finish> button to exit the wizard.
- You can use the Web Browser or GIMP Help Browser to view Help files. Select File > Preferences from the GIMP menu and click 'Help System' in the navigation region. Select the desired option in the 'Help Browser to use' field.
