Slide Master is a template that holds information such as the font size, background design, color scheme, indentation etc. for the slides. This enables one to apply the slide master to all the slides or change them as and when required.
This article outlines the steps required to create a Slide Master in PowerPoint.
- Open PowerPoint
- Select View > Master > Slide Master from the menu. This displays the slide master view as shown below:

- As can be seen from the slide master, there are placeholders for title, master text styles, and footer regions. Change as required
- For example, to change the font size of the title, highlight the ‘Master title’ style and select Format > Font from the menu. This displays the ‘Font’ window. Change the Font, Font style, Size, Color etc as required

- Similarly, to edit the characteristics of ‘Master text’ styles, highlight the ‘Master text’ style to be edited and select Format > Font from the menu. Change as required
- Like to change the ‘Bullets’ style? Highlight the ‘Master text’ style and select Format > Bullets and Numbering from the menu. Select the desired one from the list or click the ‘Customize’ or ‘Picture’ buttons to choose a new one
- To change the background, select Format > Background from the menu. Click the pop-list and select the desired color

- On completion, save this as a ‘Design Template’ – Select File > Save As from the menu. In the ‘Save as type’ select ‘Design Template’
- This Design Template can now be used for new presentation or changing the design of existing presentation
- The above example illustrates a single slide. However, you can create a master layout for several tasks such as the Introduction, Content, Questions etc. and have a master slide for graphs, images as well
