Oracle Tutor Publisher Errors

{lang: 'ar'}

Oracle Tutor Publisher is used for publishing Process documents into HTML format. It is also used for creating Student and Instructor Guides. As Oracle Tutor has a very rigid formatting style, it is not uncommon to get errors during the Publishing cycle. Some of the errors are quite ‘informative’ and can be fixed in the ‘source’ document. However, there are errors where the ‘Publisher’ does not give a very descriptive message. This article outlines the common cause of errors and the resources available to resolve them.

Error Types and Solutions

There  may be several  reasons for errors’ during the Publishing process. This list is not exhaustive and is intended to give an insight on the common error types. Some of them include:

  • Wrong formatting style used – This is by far the most common. As ‘Author’ has a very rigid formatting style, any incorrect formatting may lead to error during the ‘Publishing’ cycle. Ensure  that you follow the recommended styles as outlined in the Tutor Style Guide, located in <Drive>/Tutor11i/User Manuals directory
  • Wrong ‘Bullets’ usage can also lead to errors. Always use ‘Author’ template menu. For instance, one can specify ‘bullets’ either using from the ‘Author’ template or from the normal ‘Word’ document. Using the ‘bullets’ from the ‘Author’ template is the recommended method
  • Using the wrong format for inserting ‘Tables’ may also leads to inconsistencies. Ensure that you have the ‘Table’ format though ‘Body’ format is also acceptable
  • Large documents with several screen-shots have also stalled the Publishing cycle. Ensure that you have enough resources (RAM) on your PC
  • Ensure that Tutor ‘Author’ and ‘Publisher’ versions are compatible with each other
  • Winkey error is also quite common when large number of documents (hundreds’) are being published. This generally signifies insufficient memory (RAM) to handle the conversion. Increasing the RAM on the ‘publishing’ PC can be done to avoid this issue.

Constraints

What if you get an error during the ‘Publishing’ cycle? How to resolve them? Though ‘Publisher’ displays the errors, it is not very descriptive for one to find out the cause and resolve them. Another constraint one faces is the inconsistent error mechanism. A document with a specific formatting style might fail during ‘Publishing’ though a different document with a similar formatting style might succeed. How does one explain this? Having a user friendly error and resolve mechanism is a ‘must have’ feature in the coming versions.

Resources

What resources are available to the user? Not much, really. Few of them include:

  • Read the Support.txt document to see if a similar scenario is listed. This can be found in your Tutor installation folder (<Drive>/Tutor11i/Publish/Support.txt)
  • Refer Oracle Metalink for possible solutions
