Compare and Merge Word Documents

Word has a feature by which one can compare and merge the changes from one document onto another. For example, if there is a base document and another with some additions and changes can merge one to the other. For Word 2007 steps, click here

  • Open the Word document onto which you wish to merge the changes
  • Select Tools > Compare and Merge Documents from the menu. ‘Compare and Merge Documents’ window appearsCompare and Merge
  • Select the document that has to be compared and merged
  • Click the poplist on the ‘Merge’ button and select one of the following options
    • Merge: Select this option if the documents are to be compared and the results displayed in the ‘selected document’ (not the base document that was first open)
    • Merge into current document Select this option if the changes are to be displayed in the ‘open’ document’ (i.e. the document that was first opened)
    • Merge into new document: This option displays the changes in a new document
  • Click ‘Merge into current document’ (You can also choose the oher options discussed in the preceding section)
  • ‘Word’ compares the two document and inserts the changes with ‘track changes’ turned on. This provides a quick view of the changes that were incorporated
  • Review the changes and complete
